Hugh L. Vaughan Scholarship Luncheon

Hugh L. Vaughan knew at an early age that a college education would have to be financed through his own efforts. After the untimely death from brain cancer of his oldest daughter, Old Dominion University graduate Patricia A. Vaughan-Myers ’61, Hugh decided to establish a scholarship in her memory. Late in his life, Hugh received a handwritten note of thanks from an Old Dominion student who was a recipient of the Patricia A. Vaughan-Myers ’61 Memorial Scholarship. Deeply touched by this thoughtful gesture, Hugh said it was the best reminder that he could have had, to know that all his years of hard work had been worth it, that another young person – in an era quite different from his own – possessed the same humility, generosity of spirit and imagination to reach out and say “thank you.” This letter validated Hugh’s belief in the power of an individual to make a difference and move society forward. The annual scholarship luncheon has been named in his honor as a tribute to his vision and generosity. The Office of Development is pleased to provide an opportunity for two groups to meet who are connected by generosity and the desire to fulfill an academic dream: scholarship donors and scholarship recipients These scholarships honor individuals, organizations and accomplishments. Old Dominion University’s scholarships provide a crucial link to bring the education process full circle, from honoring the past to securing the future.”
